God does not willingly afflict and can alleviate sorrows
God alleviates extreme suffering due to His compassion: "Then repented the Lord because of their groanings" Judges 2.15
God can withhold His merited judgment due to His great mercy: "When the angel stretched out his hand upon Jerusalem to destroy it, The Lord repented him the evil. It is enough. Stay now thine hand" Samuel 24.16
God gives every chance for a change of heart before His righteous anger falls in judgment: "If that nation turns from their evil, I will repent of the evil that I hought to do unto them "Jeremiah 18.8
God nature is always to have mercy and limit his judgment: "It is of the Lord's mercies that we are comsumed" Lamentations 3.20
God wounds and heals: "Though he causes grief, yet will He have compassion" Lamentations 3.33
The character of God is merciful: "The Lord your God is gracious, merciful, slow to anger, of great kindness and repenteth Him of evil" Joel 2.13

God afflicts bodies to save souls from being eternally lost
The chastening of pain: "He is chastened also with pain upon his bed and his bones with strong pain" Job 33.19
Chastening and pain lead to learning: "Blessed is the man whom you chasteneth and teaches out of they law" Psalm 30.5
Chastening can be physically severe: "The Lord has chastened me sore: but he hath not given me over to death" Psalm 118.18
He heals if not in this life then in eternity, those He has chastened: "He maketh sore and bondeth up; He woundest and his hands make whole" Job 5.18
Grief and repentance leads to freedom and joy: "Weeping may endure for a night but joy comes in the morning" Psalm 30.5
The affliction heals the soul: He hath torn and He will heal us; He hath seen smitten and He will bind us up" Hosea 6.1

Part II

God chastises as a Father
God acts like a father:
As a man chastens his son, so the Lord chasteneth thee (Israel in the wilderness) Deut 8.5
A Holy God must punish sins: "If he commit iniquity, I will chasten him" 2 Sam 7.14
Chastening is a sign of God's fatherly love and care: "For whom the Lord loveth he chasteneth and scourgeth every son he receiveth" Heb 12.6
God corrects believers out of delight in them: "For whom the Lord loveth, He correcteth: even as a father the son in whom he delighteth". Proverbs 3.12
God requires repentance in chastened believers: "As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten: be zealous therefore and repent" Revelations 3.19

God delivers believers from suffering
Though believers go through many troubles, they are not diminished by them: "He shall deliver three in six troubles, yea in seven there shall no evil touch thee" Job 5.19
It is God who delivers believers from their troubles: "Many are the afflictions of the righteous, but the Lord delivereth them out of them all" Psalm 34.19
Believers are delivered and glorify God for saving them: "And call upon me in the day of trouble: I will deliver thee and tou shalt gloroify me" Psalm 50.15
God turns pain and tears into joy: "I will turn their mourning into joy: and will comfort them and make them rejoice from their sorrow" Jer 31.13
God delivers believers from their enemies and oppressors: "But I will deliver thee in that day and though shalt not be given into the hand of the men of whom thou are afraid" Jer 39.17
God the stronghold in trouble: "The Lord is good, a stronghold in the day of trouble and He knoweth them that trust in Him" Nah 1.10
God delivers believers from condemnation: "We are chastened by the Lord that we should not be condemned with the world" 1 Cor 11.30-32




Suffering is necessary to enter the Kingdom of God
Many are the sufferings of the righteous
Persecution is a source of joy
Suffering furthers the advance of the Gospel
Suffering is only temporary
Suffering cannot be compared with glory in Heaven
Suffering of persecution shall end in glory
Suffreing exhibits the hatred of God for sin
Suffering demnstrates the faithfulness of God
Suffering demonstrates the glory of God
God hears the cry of the suffering
